Burnout an issue as well

By prodding a child and pushing a single sport early, parents run the risk of having a child turn-off to sports in general--thus defeating the purpose of healthy life-long engagement in exercise. The American Academy of Pediatrics Council on Sports Medicine and Fitness reported on burnout and the up-tick in emergency room sports injuries among children and teens.

However, the availability of a genetic test for children as young as age one presents a challenge to parents: How many will be able to resist the temtation in this era of competitive parenting?
