Running

I am an avid runner, and a middle-aged woman. I haven't been running for long, maybe 5 years or so, and as the time goes by, I notice I never get sick, have excellent energy, look many years younger than my age, etc. I am always struck by the bias in research against running. For those who can do it and enjoy it, the benefits seem to far outweigh the risks. Like anything else, you must be sensible; anything done to excess will promote its own problems.

Running is fine for some. Purposeful walking, ideally several miles a day, is better for most. A lot of runners develop knee, hip, foot problems and need replacements in later life.

Walkers, less so.

I often wonder if our schools are missing the boat by having a track for athletes but not using it for organized walking of the middle-schoolers who are getting heavier by the year. Why not pair them off in a boy/girl format by some random drawing method and send them out for four laps of conversation? Too awkward, you say? Do you remember the gym class drill?
