Profile for Professionals
Stanford Hospital & Clinics is a place where discoveries find real-life application to the health challenges of its patients. It is known worldwide for the treatment of complex disorders in areas such as cancer, neurosciences, surgery, organ transplants and cardiovascular care.
More than 7,000 employees fulfill that mission. Researchers and clinicians work to expedite the most promising findings into advances in diagnosis, treatment and prevention strategies.
That practical application originates in the dynamic relationship between the hospital and one of the world’s premiere research and teaching institutions, the Stanford University School of Medicine. The hospital, the medical school and the Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford form the Stanford University Medical Center, with a shared commitment to advance the understanding and care of human health.
Stanford Hospital physicians have a long history of medical milestones with broad and lasting impacts. They performed the first successful adult human heart transplant in the US and the first heart-lung transplant in the world. They laid the foundation for MRI technology and developed the world’s first medical linear accelerator, the backbone of modern radiation treatment. Another Stanford physician created the CyberKnife, which directs high-intensity radiation where surgeons cannot go. The invention of the balloon catheter by another Stanford physician radically changed cardiovascular care.
The Stanford University Medical Center has recently embarked upon an extensive rebuild and renovation project. Plans include rebuilding Stanford Hospital & Clinics, expanding Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital and replacing key facilities in the Stanford School of Medicine.
