The easiest protection
Do not eat foods produced in Mexico for now.
If you are not sure if it came from Mexico,
don't eat it. Cutting off consumption is the
only way the ongoing lax inspection will stop.
Do not expect the "Government" to protect you.
Also, immersing fresh produce in a mild bleach
solution and then rinsing with fresh water will
substantially reduce any risk.(three tbl. spoons
to a gallon suffices.)
Bleach has been discoraged for some time now.
It is and always has been safe and effective.
I will remind you of all the people dropping dead
after swimming in that pool from your childhood.;o)
As you experienced, that did not happen. It Won't.
If the taste or odor of chlorine bothers you,
reminisce about those days of a swimming pool.
Back when an average person could afford one.
Before the City went broke and closed them...
When and where do I report being sick?
Just had 48 hr stomach virus or some food born illness. So, how do I know what was the cause and where do I report the illness? There is no clear way of telling unless tested at Dr's office.
I was ready to throw away everything in my fridge, but since the worst is past,I am thinking only the bagged lettuce, vine ripened tomatoes, cucumbers, and red onion. But, could it be on the cabbage, too? My chicken was thoroughly cooked, so probably not that.
safety of Americans is being compromised for the sakes of big business
an absolute travesty to see this government stand by while big business basically does what it wants even when it compromises the health of American citizens. this falls in line with the inability of this government to control the borders for these same special-interest businesses to illegally maintain slave labor wages. American government is no longer about the people except for the taxes needed to fund special-interest greed, the new American Way.
local
If you guys would shop local, atend farms markets,
and build a relationship with the farmers and the land,
you would better yourself, your local economy, and your community.
plus you would know where to go if you got sick.
El Pollo Loco
I used to love to eat here but, 2 days before Thanksgiving I had a piece of chicken and a Salad, I was sick and in bed for a whole week. never again
Government People Are Commenting
The Government Has People Commenting On This I wonder Why?...
Unsafe food chain
I suggest Homeland Security take over this job. They have a better understanding of prevention.
re: dangerous food
Doug Powell is the man. Wish there were more like him who took food safety seriously. Especially in the gov. Check out http://www.foodsafetycentral.net for more food safety news.
Re: What 42 States:
The CDC publication MMWR (available free on the internet as a PDF from the CDC site) gives you all the information as to which states. It's not a secret. Look it up.
in the nasty 2006 E. coli outbreak in spinach, organic spinach was among the culprits... Actually, Organic spinach was the only culprit. Organic growers use what they like to call "compost" this actually means animal feces- cow poop. That is often the source of E. coli. Organic produce is more likely to be contaminated with dangerous pathogenic bacteria and most organic growing operations would fail even the basic food safety guidelines.
By the way, washing in bleach or hydrogen peroxide will not protect from the problem.
