Be Mindful

Be mindful of what you're eating and how you eat it.

You wouldn't eat medium rare chicken would you?

Don't waste your money on false claims

Probiotics: Just another gimmick to sell an unproven "health food" product that is not regulated by the FDA. Don't waste your money folks. Even the term probiotics is "made-up"...beware of products using pseudo-science type terminology.

excellent advice

"What they won't tell you is a major way to cut your risk is to eat locally, instead of buying from large corporate farms."

Great advice. Not to mention the gas and energy needed to transport those foods from so far away. And the longer it travels, the more hands & dirty transport systems it passes through.

How about "grow your own".....not a bad idea.

Also, btw, all "soap" is "anti-bacterial"...that's just a buzz word to sell soap as being something special compared to soaps that don't label themselves that way. But soap that has the words anti-bacterial on it do NOT cause MRSA (germs cause MRSA, not a soap). Soap is pretty much soap, it all kills germs. So don't pay extra for the labeling, because plain old ivory can kill germs just as well as the rest.

Also, using friction & the length of time you wash your hands or veggies/fruits can also help. Thats why you see surgeons using scrubbies on their hands before surgery and why they "wash" or "scrub" in for so long. So it's not all about just the soap. I learned this while in nursing school.

salmonella

Actually, (as per last post) anti-bacterial soap is harmful, as it leads to the development of superbugs, such as MRSA. Plain soap and water is recommended by health agencies.

Doctors

If this is such a dangerous situation, why is it that my friend - who has many of these symptoms - went to the Drs. and wasn't even check for this. They referred her to gastro dr. and she got an appt. for next week, as she suffers waiting to see them. Then everyone wonders why the emergency rooms are jammed with very sick people. Oh, and if you sit there long enough, you probably get MRSA!

Salmonella - what they won't tell you

So we're supposed to only eat cooked cantaloupe? Of course we all want to protect ourselves, but the bottom line is that much of the contamination is coming from the high-volume meat industry. The wastes from these places contaminates the water, then the water contaminates the fields. And of course backing off of government oversight lets them get away with it. What they won't tell you is a major way to cut your risk is to eat locally, instead of buying from large corporate farms.

Food poisoning

Remember always:

First rule to eating and to preparing food is careful cleaning of the hands! When possible, use plastic gloves, hair nets and utensils as opposed to the use of naked hands. Dirty finger nails are deadly!

The clean instruments used in the preparation and the sanitary environment in which the food is to be prepared is essential to health!

All fruits and vegetables must be rinsed carefully before use and all foods careful stored in well cleaned, closed containers to conserve the freshness and non contamination of food stuff. Do not use foods that are damaged or bruised and that includes cans which are not completely in tact and not bent up!

Do not leave foods in their cans after opening nor open to air contact! Do not leave meats and other cooked foods in ovens for storage nor in other warm places because it causes the growth of bacteria!

All foods cooked must be placed into a fresh, cool place after careful placement in a clean closed container, preferibly in glass containers but also in plastic ones without air contamination (well sealed) and within two hours after cooking! If foods are to be reheated they must not be reheated more than ONCE!

Do not eat foods left to exposure to flies or other insects as is the case in public places and do not accept foods handled without the use of clean utensils especially when the personnel also touches monetary currency: coins, money stuff. He who serves foodstuff must not handle money by law!

Meats must be consumed within three days after cooking with respect for careful storage in a refridgerator and careful conservation), and vegetables, within no more than two days! Leftovers otherwise must be thrown out into the garbage to prevent food poisoning! Check that the foods are not expired. Consume foods as immediately as possible after picking from the tree, vine, or garden when mature, and as soon as possible after being slaughtered in the case of meats and fish. (The date of expiration must be respected when foods are bought in public places!) All milk products must be carefully sealed and consumed within a day of opening of the carton for security. Do not leave in warm places but store in a cold place.

These are just a few warnings:

WASH HANDS CAREFULLY with antibacterial soap regularly and especially before food preparation, eating and after use of the bathroom!

May God be with us.

salmonella outbreak

why aren't they telling us which states are involved. Why is Ohio the only state that has agreed to be named as one the states that have been affected? Why do hte states get a choice in that decision?

salmonella

I was just hospitalized for four days with classic Salmonella symptoms, fever, abdominal cramps and the worst diarhea of my life. Tests showed nothing but my Dr did admit tests can be inconclusive. The only thing I ate that no one else in my house did was a Little Cesars hot n ready pepperoni pizza that seemed pretty under cooked. I refuse to buy food from China but who know where restaurants get their ingredients. I agree our government needs to do more to protect consumers.
