Distorted Irresponsible Reporting

This Article is medical and science reporting at it's worst.

Instead the article lists conditions that cause sleep disturbance. Sleep is not merely a lifestyle choice Many people that don't get alot of sleep make a concerted effort to get a minimal amount and would like to get more.

Sleep disturbance is a result of many of the listed illness not a cause! This interpretation is supported even by the cherry picked studies reported.

Correlation with medical conditions, obesity, and acute illness near the end of life make any study about the amount of sleep increasing the likelihood of death.

The crown jewel of how bad this article is has to be the report about behavior problems of children that sleep less. From the cited evidence it more accurately would have read:

Hyper Children Sleep Less

It's not called hyperactive because you love to sleep! How could anyone believe much less write that sleeping less causes hyperactivity rather than hyperactivity interfering with sleep? Even many adults with ADD or ADHD frequently have hard time "just lying there" long enough to fall asleep and tend to wait until exhausted or fall asleep watching TV. Hyperactive children jump on thier beds nearly as much as they lie awake on them. To make matter even sillier all medication effective for ADHD also causes trouble with sleep.

To make matters worse there are may cognitive benefits of good sleep well documented in double blind controlled studies and countless sleep lab studies about what constitutes a good nights sleep.. I could write a more accurate article based on memory without doing any research!

Having two full sleep cycles night as well as a short nap in the afternoon. The length of a full sleep cycle varies from person to person with the normal range being between 3-4 hours. For some people 2 sleep cycles only take 6 hours and for others it takes 8. Many fall in-between and some fall outside that range.

Each person has an optimum amount of sleep. The best way to find out is to schedule bedtime early enough to wake up on time naturally.Use an alarm clock as a precaution instead of relying it or family member to wake up regularly.

A nap in the afternoon or after work before a long commute home is a great way increase late afternoon productivity and avoid accidents on the way home. It may be needed even with a full night of undisturbed sleep. Yet few offices accommodate much less encourage a short afternoon nap.

sleeping better

I have found, that if I exercise, during the day, by working out or working hard all day (and I don't mean sitting behind a desk), I mean physical labor. My body is tired, and I sleep better. Try that; it may work for you.

Help!!

I am a little confused, I talk in my sleep and stare at my sibling in my sleep and mumble something at him and go back to sleep. As far as I know, I have sleptwalked only twice, no one in my family member thinks that I sleep walk. My sister tried to wake me up once for my studies and I screamed at her and banged the door on her face. Am I a danger to anyone?

sleeping well

my mother has the same issues she sleeps for 2-3 hrs a night and then sits around for the rest of the night while everyone else sleeps a full night, i have been visiting her in australia for the last four days and have been monitoring her diet and the chemicals that she uses daily to clean her house i made her an organic breakfast, lunch & dinner and burned some lavender oil in the aromatheropy burner all day and used only palm or soy wax candles not parafin, to take the strong chemiccal smell out of the air, caused by toilet cleaner room fresh sprays floor cleaner hand wash etc, i made her a valerian tea later on that night and she slept like a baby a full night, i also took all the electrical devices out of her room.

sleep for the aged

i believe the normal older person just cannot sleep at night, and it is a natural phenomenon. They make up for it during the day! That too is normal.

The fact that older people routinely have insomnia at night just indicates it is normal! One just has to learn to live it with it.

I wish it were otherwise, but I have just accepted it.

how to get a good sleep

when i feel complex, i can't feel asleep.i want to know the way to relax and get a good sleep.

Sleep is vital to everyday peak performance

Sleep whats SLEEP, I take naps, well working 4 jobs for a 8 years now. But after all that, nah U seriously you need some time for ur body to recover from everyday stresses. You need this time to regenerate, if you don't you will just age faster and not be at ur full potential mentally and physically, YOUR'RE NOT SUPERMAN. Set a pattern for sleep, lay in comfortable bed, right temperature, quiet if possible, no distractions. Sunlight suppresses melatone(don't know how spell, doesn't matter thought, just know its a natural body chemical puts u asleep) If you over sleep open blinds or curtains to help wake, use snooze once you wake from first alarm thats gets you out of REM (deep sleep). no matter what you will always perform at ur peak daily with plenty of rest. not too much no too little ,6-8 hrs for the avg adult.

Not sleeping through the night

I have been in the military for 22 years and I wonder why I never can sleep throughout the night without waking two or three times as well as not being able to sleep in the morning, is it my body being used to getting up everyday for 22 years or do I have some sort of sleep disorder.

Zac of MD

If your 230 lbs and 5' 9" you are obese and are heading for early onset of poor health. You may feel "great" but it won't last and you won't be the best you can be. Oh, If you are 6" you are still over weight.

Lack of sleep

Hmmm since I usually get from 2 to 3 hours sleep per night, I wonder why I am not affected with the ill effects mentioned in the article. 73 years old and still do a full day work with cattle, etc. Must be something wrong with me!!!
