numbness in finger tips

When you try to make a fist, and one finger locks in an open position, what could be the problem. The finger will go back to normal by using the other hand to it`s normal position.

This happens while sleeping, and I awake with this uncomfortable feeling. In a few moments all returns to normal, but sometimes develops when im just reading a book, or newspaper.
