How to Help Your Heart

Posted February 3, 2009

Whether you are a woman who has been diagnosed with heart disease or a woman who would simply like to take better care of her own heart, WomenHeart is for you. If you have heart disease, WomenHeart's online care guide provides tips on drugs and devices, instructions for making the most of your next doctor's visit, and a surgical procedure guide. It tells survivors and their families how to care for their emotional health—from reducing stress to adjusting to life after a heart attack.

WomenHeart—founded nine years ago by three female heart attack survivors—even offers opportunities to raise awareness about the importance of prevention, early detection, accurate diagnosis, and proper treatment of women's heart disease. At the heart of the organization are more than 400 WomenHeart Champions, all survivors who have graduated from the four-day Science and Leadership Symposium. These women go on to lead support groups and serve as community educators and media spokeswomen.

It's time to take charge of your own heart health: eat fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains; get 30 minutes of moderate physical activity per day, watch your weight, quit smoking, know your numbers (blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, etc.), and manage stress through yoga, meditation, or deep breathing. And, to make even more of a difference in your life and the lives of all women, visit and join WomenHeart.org today.
