Health Tip: Signs That You've Had Too Much Caffeine

Should you be drinking less coffee, tea or soda?

Posted April 21, 2009

(HealthDay News) -- You may relish that first cup of coffee in the morning, then a few more cups throughout the day. But if you've had too much caffeine, which is a stimulant, it can lead to significant side effects.

The National Sleep Foundation offers these symptoms of excessive caffeine consumption:

  • A decline in fine motor coordination.
  • Inability to sleep.
  • Headaches.
  • Anxiety, increased nervousness and feeling dizzy.
  • Feeling irritable.
  • Increased heart rate.
  • Excessive urination.
  • Feeling down once the caffeine is out of your system (a caffeine "crash").
