Battling Diabetes With Diet and Exercise
Prevention and intensive management are the keys to stopping the epidemic

Stay away from the starchy carbs too!
I am amazed that when people are diagnosed (and my husband has been) as diabetic, the nutritionists do not explain that eating white starchy carbs are just like eating sugar. Also, people are not told to cut sugar out altogether. My husband used the South Beach Diet to lose 40 lbs. and has adopted a low carb/complex carb diet since. He does not have to medicate. He does monitor his blood sugar.
what to do??
cut white flour products and sugar. exercise daily if possible. But above all read!!! read different books on controlling your blood sugar. get a kit to measure your blood sugar and follow your doctor instructions. Thats what i did and it works.
Diabetes and food
There is nothing at all wrong with exercise, but I believe the main problem with controlling diabetes is really with food. I believe the whole phobia against animal fats is contributing to the diabetes epidemic. There is no valid scientific study that proves that polyunsaturated fats and foods from grain are healthy for you, or that animal meats or fats are unhealthy. When people start staying away from meat, dairy and eggs, they usually end up replacing them with way more bread, sugar and corn. Eat enough of this stuff and you're asking for trouble.
Diabetes is a condition where the body has trouble dealing with glucose. I find it incredible that doctors would tell their diabetic patients that a large fraction of their calories should come from starches, but please stay away from the desserts. It's like telling an alcoholic that it's OK to drink beer, but try not to drink too much of the Johnny Walker Red.
finding out
I don't what to do because I just found out I have type (1) diapetes or,what I can eat? And I don't know. What to do does any body have any tips?
Olive oil
While the comments here are generally good, Mr Kleinbaur is in error grouping olive oil with processed vegetable oils, and has misquoted the web site he references. You have to ask yourself, do I want to complain about how many medications I take and how much they cost or do I turn off the TV, watch what I eat and get out and PLAY with the grandchildren instead of watching them play. Park the car and get out and walk. Less money for meds and trips to the doctor is more money available for real necessities and FUN. A healthy lifestyle can really improve your bottom line as well as the quality of life. Our bodies are a machine which requires proper maintenance and use. If you don;t maintain the machine and don;t use it, it will simply rust and rot away.
Battling Diabetes with Diet and Exercise
I totally agree with the comment on not being able to go the "finger pricking" route. In fact, I wonder why in this day and age there is no other way or equipment to check progress, except puncturing skin--it seems barbaric to me. So, that method of monitoring my condition is not acceptable.
I accept the reality of the change of diet and exercise. It appears to be so fundamental to me, and I am working on it. I am 86, and I would like to stick around for awhile. I am puzzled by one comment on olive oil--always thought it was a good thing.

Resveratrol can lower blood sugar naturally
Resveratrol can help you to lead a long and healthy life so says Dr. Oz.
Red wine alone does not supply enough resveratrol to achieve the
full range of benefits because one glass of red wine has only about
1mg of resveratrol and you need about 250mg/day. You need to take
high potency resveratrol supplements to achieve the results documented
in scientific studies.Resveratrol Supplements can also help you control
your weight naturally by increasing energy, reducing cravings, and limiting
your appetite.According to Wikipedia, Consumer Lab, an independent dietary
supplement and over the counter products evaluation organization,
published a report on 13 November 2007 on the popular resveratrol
supplements. The organization reported that there exists a wide range
in quality, dose, and price among the 13 resveratrol products
evaluated. The actual amount of resveratrol contained in the
different brands range from 2.2mg for Revatrol, which claimed to have
400mg of "Red Wine Grape Complex", to 500mg for Biotivia.com Transmax,
which is consistent with the amount claimed on the product's label.
Prices per 100mg of resveratrol ranged from less than $.30 for
products made by Biotivia.com, jarrow, and country life, to a high of
$45.27 for the Revatrol brand.

Optimal Nutrition, Some Exercise- Fight Diabetes
I disagree with not getting fully educated on what works to fight diabetes! Our best source for "Healthy Lifestyle" free, evidence-based education is from www.drmcdougall.com . Go there and read the archives on "Hot Topic - Diabetes."
http://www.drmcdougall.com/med_hot_diabetes.html . And, sorry, your best results come from a whole foods, plant-based diet centered on starchy veggies and green and yellow veggies. Avoid all animal products! Minimize vegetable processed oils. Olive oil is a junk food -- empty calories. Eat less fruit, nuts, avocados, if wanting more rapid weight loss. You can get off of blood pressure medications very quickly and cholesterol level drops better and safer than with using statin drugs.
