reversal type 1

interested to know more about john epperson comments. i do believe that type 1 coulc be cured by stopping the autoimmune process as any other disease can by either strict diet or supplementation or ? this is of course speculative but reports of this have been seen within the raw food community and others. whether it was type 1 they were dealing with or a variant i don't know. beta cells have been shown to have a regenerative quality so the comment that it is a done deal is premature. many studies have shown that the cells may very well be regenerative. my 11 year old daughter will see a cure before she is out of high school. the biggest hurdle is the pharmaceuticalindustrialcomplex whose ruthless profit motive may buy the scientists involved and jettison their work into expensive programs that improve maintenance but require repeated treatments.

Ignorance as usual...

Type 1 diabetes just doesn't "reverse". It is not caused by a high carb diet (it is an autoimmune disease caused by the immune system, hence the above article), so it can't be cured by such.

Either

a) Your co-workers son doesn't have true autoimmune Type 1 diabetes (perhaps he has Type 2 or MODY).

or

b)He is in the "honeymoon" phase. Often the need for insulin injections decrease for a short period of time after the diagnosis of Type 1 diabetes. This happens because the dying beta cells are pushing out that last extra "kick" of insulin. If this is the case, he will be back on insulin in no time no matter what you feed him. Low carbs may help whatever beta cells he has left, but it won't stop his immune system from destroying them. Sorry, but this is a well documented phenomena. Just Google "diabetes honeymoon".

Type 1 Diabetes Cure

Yes, the research to find cure for Type 1 Diabetes requires deeper commitment, funding and humankind's focus.Imagine that after 80 years of ushering in of Insulin,no major, forward step, has surfaced on the scene. When compared to other advancements in medical and scientific fields,I feel and urge powers, that be, to conscientiously look into research which will help sufferers of this most difficult disease to lead normal life alongside their brethren. It is ironical to term it as a 'lifestyle issue'. I also appeal to all Spiritual Masters of all castes and creeds to pray to THE ALMIGHTY to bless those affected overcome this malaise.Special prayers be organised to invoke blessings of THE LORD.Message be please spread accordingly the world over to attain this goal in this decade.

praying for a cure

I am reading and closely following Dr.faustman's research.I think she's making process.I also think there are evil people out there who will do anything in their power to stop some sceintists from finding a cure, like the pharmaceutical companies, who are making BILLIONS & BIllIONS of dollars in profit. My 3 year old daughter was diagnosed with type 1.Jamie from MA,i agree & love what you've written.Iam praying and pleading to GOD for a cure.

Beyond Insulin: Searching for a Cure

This is an excellent article that has given me hope that the cure is on the horizon, that at least they are not giving up on trying to find the elusive cure. It is so good of the trial participants who do not know whether they are in the placebo group or not, to sacrifice themselves in the name of the diabetes cure. They will not be forgotten.

reversing type 1 diabetes

Recently my colleague's 10 year old son was rushed to the hospital for diabetic symptoms, e.g., urinating 8 to 10 times per night.

The doctor immediately diagnosed his case with a glucose number of more than 900.

He was immedately put on I/V insulin, and placed on a strict regimented diet limiting his carbohydrates both sugar and starch. Within the last 6 months he has been taken off insulin, glucose is normal, and maintains a very strict diet limiting carbohydrates.

Dr. Faustman

I agree! The only thing that made Dr. Faustman's study controversial is that JDRF did not take it seriously. I think they later changed their minds after 2 independent studies - trying to prove her wrong - came up with the same findings. The exciting thing is that the mice's islet cells, thought to be eliminated, began regenerating when the immune system was held off. A simple vaccine cure may not be too exciting for the Pharm companies who sell diabetes treatment products. It also may not be exciting to stem-cell fanatics. After taking insulin shots and finger sticks for 25 years, I find it VERY exciting. It's interesting that she is relying on PEOPLE, and not corporations, for her funding.

good news on the way....

Well I support Dr. Faustman we even raise money for her so she can do the human trials. But I am ery happy to see everyone doing so much work on type one diabetes I hope there will be a cure I really really hope. It's so very hard to watch my 5 year old go though this for 3 years now I hope they all find a cure then everyone who is suffering from type one can be helped!

Dr Denise Faustman

I would prefer if you did not refer to Dr Faustman's 2001 study as "controversial". The fair word would be "groundbreaking". Remember the JDRF have actually validated her work in 3 different studies. She is amazing and after all of the years of unsuccessful attempts by many scientists, she is taking a different approach. We all know that if we always do what we've always done, we'll always get what we always got....so she has stormed a different path. As the Mum of a type 1 little boy, I have great faith in her. When it all feels too much, I think of her and her work and I can keep going because I believe she will be the light at the end of the tunnel.
