as far as the gardasil vacine goes, it's true, may women, both young and in their 20's are having problems with it. i am one of them. i recieved two out of the three gardasil shots with a bad rash all over my body after both shots. this rash remained on my skin and prevented me from doing my normal activities such as work and sleep for over a year and is still on my scalp a year and ahalf later. the gardasil vacine also threw me into hypothyroidism, which i now have to take hormone supplements for. ladies, if your doctor suggests the gardasil vacine, GET THE FACTS, ask about ALL of the warnings and side effects and KNOW your medical history before recieving the vacine. and if you do have a reaction, please, be sure that it gets reported!

Yes the idea of the TRAINING PROGRAMME was good.
The vaccine trains your body to defend against what is in the vaccine.
But as said if there is something that matches what you are made of then watch out for ANAPHYLAXIS and SUDDEN DEATH.
But don't worry because the efficacy is somewhat lower and often you get away with AUTISM.
Most though do get protected and NINETY NINE PERCENT success is a DISTINCTION in anyones books.
Sad if you are the ODD ONE though.
Most vaccines are checked on less than 1 000 folk who are possibly 20 to 30 years of age.
Most are followwed up for 5 days.
If thats ok, wham bam TEN at time to ONE day babies and no EXCUSES.

The Natl. Childhood Vaccine Injury Act of 1988 was not passed because there wasnt a problem. It was passed because there was an enormous problem and the drug mfgs were going to get out of the vaccene business because of litigation costs if the govt. didnt assume the liability. Since then 100s of millions of $s have been paid out in claims with more being filed every year. There is a huge unacknowledged problem with vaccines with the majority of the medical profession. We need vaccines, we just need them improved and administered differently. One size doesnt fit all.
Bad trade-off

33,000 lives "saved" versus 30,000 injured with 3,000-4,500 catastrophic events. I find this a bad trade-off. It's one thing to risk immunization "adverse events" against something as deadly as small pox or polio. It's another to risk them against diseases which are more nuisance than deadly threat.
The significant factor seems to be the $10 billion savings in healthcare costs. If we had universal healthcare, that much could be saved by eliminating insurance companies' premiums/profits.
Looking at the odds?
David, you are misstating the situation in your response. No vaccine is "99% effective". Most have an uptake that is less than 50%; some like the pertussis have less than 35% uptake. This is the reason that we have to give multiple doses to children to ensure that they finally do what we expect them to do.
And coverage wanes rather quikly. No vaccine gives protection for longer than a decade, some wane after only a few years. We are finding that people who were fully vaccinated with the MMR as children for instance, are susceptible when they grow older (recent outbreaks of mumps in college age students hit fully vaccinated people as readily as those who were never vaccinated).
We are also assuming that the limited studies conducted were reported honestly to the federal regulators. As we have seen with one classification of medicines after another, Pharma misrepresents their intended products in the effort to rush another product to the market. Independant researchers have found that the studies which "prove" vaccines are effective are largely inadequate to do so, and do not begin to determine whether they are safe (Cochrane Review).
I do find it ironic that we are the most heavily vaccinated society on Earth, and yet our children score lower than nearly every other country in the developed world for life expectancy. I am not going to sit here and suggest that all human ills come from being vaccinated, but I am also going to say that vaccines are not the mannah from heaven that some people would like us to believe.
There are vaccines that are worth the risk (polio, rubella), there are vaccines that are NOT worth the risk (Hep B, HPV) and there are vaccines that are just a waste of money (Varicella, flu). Simply lining up to take whatever shot they wish to stick in your arm is foolish at best. Suggesting it is our duty as citizens to do so for the good of the herd is rationalizing Jackson's "Lottery". This is made all the more reprehensible when you consider that good herd management calls for burning acres of citrus to halt blight or slaughtering a million cows to control mad cow.
And when a major adverse event occurs and you try to use the NVICP for compensation for the damage, the US govt. prosecutes the case more vigourously than they do many of the violent felons who escape conviction on stupid technicalities.
For the Masses...
Public Health decisions have to be made for the whole not the exception. We have never experienced most of the diseases that vaccinations prevent...which is why it is tempting for people to toy with the idea of vaccine safety. At the end of the day I still think the benefits outweigh the risk.

Boys are the chief carriers of the human papiloma virus, less so if they are circumsized. They should not be exempt from the vaccination drive. However in general, use of the vaccination would appear to encourage unprotected sex in these targeted minors, which is converse to the campaign to halt the progress of AIDS and other sexually communicable diseases. Morality is mostly about health it would seem. Condoms appear to be the answer here.
let's look at the odds...
I am a little dismayed by the severity of the reaction by the parents of children who MAY have suffered unnecessarily due to vaccination. I definitely think there should be proper, and rational, warnings that some minuscule percent of vaccine recipients may get conditions X, Y, or Z. However, it is simply illogical to denounce a vaccine that is nearly 99% effective and is given to millions of people out of which less than a tenth of a percent suffer adverse effects. Dr. Fauci has long been a realist, suggesting that we're all different enough from one another that we should probably look to genetic testing in the future for planning vaccine selection. It's the Law of Large Numbers in effect here. Vaccines save millions, let's not give them such a bad wrap.
