What You Need to Know About Mapping the Cancer Genome

Cure or Cause

It is a valid argument that cancers are caused by industry attacking our air, water, and the soil which we use to grow food to feed our children. So why are we finding cures when we should be preventing the root cause? Stop letting them kill ourselves with these products and pollutants that cause cancer, minimizing the effects to say the least?<P>

It is becoming increasingly clearer that the morons at the chemical companies, food producers, and industrial manufacturers are playing Russian roulette with our very lives by finding cheaper solutions to feeding, clothing, and housing. (Look at the Trans-Fat episode that has been found out recently. A product solely designed to save companies money without testing for harmful effects on humans.)<P>

The entire reason for that existance of these products and additivies are to save companies money! Yet by doing so, they increase, if not make certain, that we will be less healthy and will become riddled with cancers and diseases.<P>

It is terrorizing without telling us what is the terror. I would rather be attacked by terrorist people rather than attacked from the inside of my body by companies that make products that are unhealthy and designed solely to save some greed-based corporation money and that we thought, because a federal government designed to protect us from such infiltrators, was safe to ingest. At least I could punch a terrorist in the face but I can't punch a DOW chemical sales agent in the face, though I would like to!<P>

I believe their is a cure

Think about it. It is the same scenario as the car that gets 80 miles per gallon. Could you imagine if those people who knew were to release the cure for cancer. The cost for medical treatment would plummet and the rich would not get richer. We live in a society driven by greed. It is time for change and let's not live for the dollar but for a life style that is comfortable for both those that are blessed with wealth and those that are not. I remember a time when the spread between wealth and comfort was a lot closer. You can determine this by the car that people drive or the mansions that we live in or the closthes we wear or the restaurants we frequent. Wouldn't it be great if we could all enjoy the same pleasures.

Lynch Syndrome

I had my DNA sent to Mayo Clinic and was diagnosed with the Lynch Syndrome which puts one at risk for several different types of cancer (3 of which I have had) - My last was Stage 4 breast cancer and that was over 5 yrs. ago...I feel very lucky but what are the stats for the children of people like me...is there any recent data? I would be happy to contribute my information if it would be helpful

i believe that cancer can only be truly defeated by a better understanding and utilization of immunology. "Patient heal thyself". the healthy immune system can dynamically react to new versions of "intruders". boosting this response with the villain itself can lead to subsequent irradication.

sequencing is now cheap and although it is not a treatment it can yield insights into the biology of cancer. you learn the language (DNA) then learn how it's expressed (mRNA) and finally the result of this expression (protein). understanding the story requires knowing the chain of events.

Cancer Treatment

I am convinced that conventional cancer treatments (i.e. Radiation and Chemotherapy) are cures that are worse than the disease. They ravage the body and the immune system which is the very organ that you need to fight the cancer with, lower the quality of life and I would bet many times are responsible for killing the patient before the cancer does. There has got to be a better way.

GLIOBLASTOMA BRAIN CANCER

MY HUSBAND PASSED AWAY IN MAY 2007 OF GLIOBLASTOMA BRAIN CANCER. HE WAS DIAGNOSED IN DECEMBER 2006. DURING THE OPERATION, HE SUFFERED A STROKE IN THE SPEACH & COMPREHENSION AREA OF HIS BRAIN. HIS LEFT SIDE WAS PARALYZED BUT AFTER SOME THERAPY HE WAS ABLE TO WALK WITH A WALKER. HAD I KNOWN THEN, WHAT I KNOW NOW, I NEVER WOULD HAVE AGREED TO LET HIM HAVE CHEMOTHERAPY OR RADIATION. AFTER STARTING TEMODAR AND RADIATION, HE WENT PROGRESSIVELY DOWNHILL. SAID EVERYTHING TASTED LIKE METAL SO HE STOPPED EATING AND BECAME VERY WEAK. LESS THAN ONE MONTH AFTER HE FINISHED HIS TREATMENTS, HE PASSED AWAY.

Fishing for Mutations is Endless and Futile

The continuing results from these endless studies are that there is no end. All cancers are different moment to moment, all cells within a cancer are different, and the difference ends with the individual patient yielding no help for future patients. Professor Elledge's approach is one step away from this futility, but still problematic. The only hope is to understand the key first event and the evolution of balance versus abnormality in total cell processes that gives rise to cancer and how these cells survive. This is ultimate prevention and the only hope. Stop the endless and futile genomic sequencing waste that will differ with every sample now and divert the scarce resources to the fundamental problem.
