Since most thyroid cancer patients have successful outcomes, many people receive long-term follow-up care. While thyroid cancer recurs most often within the first three years, it can recur much later—even up to 40 years. For that reason, lifetime follow-up is important.
If your thyroid is removed, your body no longer will be able to make thyroid hormone, which is needed to regulate metabolism and other bodily functions. You will take daily thyroid hormone pills the rest of your life to replace this hormone.
