tyramine-free diet works for me
I have had great success totally overcoming migraines with the tyramine-free diet. I was having very, very frequent migraines and nothing helped much. After about 2 weeks on the tyramine-free diet, the headaches were over. If by mistake I eat something I shouldn't have, I can definitely feel the beginnings of a headache coming on, so I know tyramines are the cause, for me. It takes some effort at first, and you have to be very vigilant about what's in any foods you eat, but stick with it until you've given it a couple of weeks trial. I've told a number of people about it. For some it works dramatically well, for others not at all. It's free, healthy, and has no side effects. To find the diet and info about other people's results, you can just search tyramine-free diet + migraines, or here is one link I found:

significance?
First of all how much would this device cost, probably too much for most average sufferer. And secondly it helped 39% and 22% in the placebo group, is that really significant? Who's to say the migraines weren't minor to begin with? I've experienced them that have lasted 2-3 hours and others that seem to go on for a week.
Just wanted to share my skepticism
Migraines
I agree that the placebo effect is what's going on here, but when it comes to migraines..anything is worth a try... and to those with cluster headaches who says theirs are much more intense than migraines, please don't underestimate a migraine if you have never suffered from them. I have been hospitalized, passed out driving from the pain..thrown up for days.. I can't lay down or even sit down until it lessens a little and have little or no relief from any of the medications for the onset of migraines. I am on Inderal which has caused them to be much less frequent (thank God), but still when I do get one it is debilatating.
Conflict of interest
Please note that the professor is a consultant for the manufacturer. This type of conflict of interest should immediately create a healthy level of skepticism. "Skepticism is the beginning of wisdom."
Strong enough
Anything that's strong enough to help is strong enough to cause harm. And they don't cite convincing numbers for this study or link the actual study. I've had migraines with auras since I was 8, and addressed it in many ways. Imitrex works if I get it at the aura, but it makes me too loopy and I finally decided the possible side effects are too much (death).
I've had almost none for the last year, since I saw an accupuncturist. I hear this doesn't work for everyone, I found her by asking other accupuncturists who they would recommend, they're not all created equal. I was having 2-3 migrains a week and they stopped after the first visit, until months after ly last visit. Interestingly the auras took much longer to go away. For the few migraines I've had I take Pian Tou Tong Wan, a chinese herbal mix with effects similar Imitrex, but the side affects are much milder.
Neurofeedback for migraines
Neurofeedback (also known as EEG biofeedback) and HEG (hemoencephalography) are very effective treatments for migraines. Both have been shown to help over 80% of migraine sufferers. After 20-30 sessions, migraine relief (in most cases) is permanent.
Migraine Laugh, Relief, Prevention
I loved the migraine guy Shawn with the hammer relief. I laughed out loud!
As for me, weather and barometric pressure changes trigger my migraines. I've had terrible migraines during June in NYC and upstate--all due to weather.
None of the various drugs seem to work or help--altho' I'm on a daily heart med and magnesium citrate for migraine prophylaxis.
Sometimes I can work through the migraine--work, play, interact. Othertimes I retreat to that dark room.
I'd prefer research folks come up with stopping migraine before it starts.
As for this device and Shawn's hammer--when in the throes of a migraine siege--I'd prefer applying direct pressure to a pressure point on the hand and/or direct pressure to the entire head and neck and/or accupuncture with Japanese needles (thinner than their Chinese counterparts).
SLBT of NYC and NYS
When I get a migraine here's what I do...
When I get a migraine I immediately smash my thumb with a hammer, it makes me forget all about my migraine! Serious it works. Takes my thumb about a month to heal though!
great news
i thought i was almost alone in that i see different kinds of visual things before the migraine hits. i usually see glints of silver specks moving very fast and other things like auras visually before it hits. then that pain hits; it is like i have been hit over the head with an iron frying pan and i get sick to my stomach and my eyes hurt and it hurts to keep them open.
my migraines are caused by a severe allergy to chicken and even if my food has been cooked in the same spot as chicken i get sick just from this little contact. this week i had a salad in the airport and the clerk must have, before me, handled chicken for another customer with her plastic gloves and i got sick from it 10 hours later.
i would love this device to work and can't wait to try it. i also will try other's solutions listed here too, for this.
right now when it hits i take midrin and if possible get accupuncture, and do deep breathing. I use something to vibrate the back of the neck and do hot and cold compresses alternating them.
