Scoliosis Tests

Posted January 3, 2008

Doctors recommend that children be screened annually for scoliosis starting at the age of 8. Initial screenings are often done in schools or during routine physical exams using the Adam's Forward Bend Test, in which children are asked to bend over at the waist as if they were touching their toes. An examiner can detect any asymmetry with the use of a device called a scoliometer.

If your child screens positive for scoliosis, a doctor may order X-rays to confirm the diagnosis. Your doctor may recommend follow-up X-rays to monitor the scoliosis. If there are unusual symptoms such as pain, numbness, or weakness, other tests such as an MRI may be ordered.
