Best Nursing Homes: The U.S. News Honor Roll

Posted January 11, 2010

Corrected on 01/21/10: An earlier version of this article has been updated to add a nursing home to those listed in the Honor Roll. The home was omitted because of an error in staffing data provided to the federal government, since corrected.

The 12 nursing homes listed alphabetically below, culled from more than 15,500 homes in the latest U.S. News America's Best Nursing Homes rankings, make up the Honor Roll. They had to get four straight quarters of perfect five-star ratings from the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services in each of the three categories in which the agency evaluates nursing homes: health inspections, nurse staffing, and quality of care. Several are pediatric facilities, defined as nursing homes because they provide Medicaid-funded long-term care or skilled rehabilitation services.

The homes were evaluated using hundreds of data yardsticks. A few of the measures on which the homes were judged are shown. National averages for all U.S. nursing homes are included for comparison.

Again, it is the Little Sisters of the Poor that run this Home and it is the top of the ten best in New York State. In my experience with culture change in long term care, the emphasis is much on the easier things to fix, i.e, the physical look of the facility. It is much harder to change leadership, financial priorities and staff motivation. And, brenjahhhh is correct, most nursing homes need significant improvement.
