Best Nursing Homes
You listed Alabama as one of the states w/the best nursing homes. I would like to know when this rating was taken? I have taken my mom to three in the city of Birmingham, and the nursing staff was low, the food was terrible , one they just threw together at the last minute and the compassion of the staff & even the director was awful. The smell was cover up, because once she was there, I would have to continually tell them to change her. The last one she was in evidently was tagged because of their short staff & they started hiring young people who had no experience or patience for the elderly, regardless of the reason they were there. I just don't understand, why the elderly who might or might not have love ones to come & see them and have been upstanding citizens, served their country & their family can not be treated w/dignity & respect in their last years. Why is it, if you say nursing home, it is such a stigma. Going through these difficult times w/my mother, I pray now that God would just take me away before I get where my family would need to admit me to a nursing home. It is a terrible shame that elective officials are taking a stand for almost everything, but the care of our elderly, which the majority of every one of us will get to at some point & time
Pick the Best Care Team
Regardless of the facility rating, which could be window dressing anyway, rate the commitment of care by the nurses, and staff especially during a facility crisis, staff shortfall, or other temporary problem.
For a number of reasons, caregivers are sometimes feel pressured to give more or less care based on the facilities current and sometimes termporary money (profit or budget) motive.
Some staff, despite that motive, continue their quality of care uninterrupted, but not always following the company's directive
or "hint-tensions".
A lean facility, regardless of reasons temporary or another, and regardless of numbers of stars, is always at risk of shorting the resident in some way or another. What should a "Best Care Team" do? Most employees, to keep their jobs, will do what is best for their boss, their pay, THEIR families
have needs after all.
Regardless, you are still paying the same for YOUR new home which includes helpful compassionate servants. You should get the best care at ALL times. You are not a guest at a hotel.
A (5) star home does NOT necessarily mean their caregivers will "be there" for YOU in YOUR time of need, or that that facility will retain the best staff for YOUR interests.
A (1) star home may not budget or allow their caregivers to perform the care you might expect, (no duck pond), but there are 1 star homes listed that have caring and compassionate staff who DO have your intetrests at heart, regardless of the ventures initial or ongoing investment, shortcomings, etc.
Even in good times there are way, way, too many "I could care less givers" who are just that. Way too many, what a shame on nursing schools and nursing law more interested in ACT scores vs. aptitude for caring.
There are caregivers who, while following all laws, and with great emotional sacrifice and financial risk to themselves, and their families, despite the fact they may be fired, ridiculed, envied, even sabotaged personally and professionally, still give residents (people too) their very best. Seek them out.
