is it time for a nursing home for my wife Patti.

we are 71 yr`s old, my wife has vasculer dementia for the past 4 yr`s.also suffers a very bad balance problem and falls alot,she has been very lucky she hasn`t been serriously hirt until 3 weeks ago when i did not feel the bed move and woke up to tell her to step before grabbing the safty bar by our bed, she fell foward and hit her head on the bathroom tile floor.thethe loud thud woke me,when i reach her she was out cold, holding her in my arms and gently patting her face she started to awake.she is recovering from swelling and bleeding in her skull.it`s to apoint that i don`t think i can take care of her any longer. we both have had bypass surgury,i myself complete replacement knee. she can no longer walk by her self or shower or dress her self. thank you for listening. ralph

Do not assume that the most attractive facility is the best. Spend some time there morning, afternoon, and evening, to see what the general care level is. Are patients with dementia isolated so their screams or unease are harmiing others nearby? I have three relatives in nursing homes now. And some are better. Some are cash cows and hire too many people with little training . Is a nutritionist available? How is the overall quality of food? Most spend 3 to 6 hours in the dining area, some out of loneliness, others just to get out of their confinement in the rooms. Are the facilities properly staffed at night? Many become ill at night, and without care, can be very vulnerable. Would you live there if you had to? If not, check another facility. They want to keep the places full for maximum profit, so all will feed you a good line.

For the purpose of disclosure I do sell long term care financial planning. That being said I want to add to this discussion these facts.

Every week I get calls from someone trying to protect their parents or their own incomes and assets from the the high cost of long term care but have waited until they either need care or have been diagnosed with an uninsurable condition.

My answer to them is to sympathetically say "They (you) are uninsurable. The insurance companies see them (you) as a burning building that you're asking them to insure. What you need to do if you have not yet done it is to consult with an elder law attorney as soon as possible. You can find one at elderlawanswers.com. As people are becoming more comfortable researching and purchasing insurance over the Internet I have developed a large number of clients in large cities and small towns all across America. A few things to think about:

1. The only thing protecting you from long term care today is your health, and that can change at any time.

2. You insure your home, your car, your heath, but what protects your retirement income and assets if you should need extended care not covered by health insurance or Medicare?

3. If you reach age 65 the GAO says that you have a 70% chance of needing LTC, how do you want to pay for it?

4. Don't assume you are insurable and don't assume you are uninsurable. I have gotten people insured who were declined. I've had declines overturned, and there is a way to get LTC insurance without underwriting.

5. LTC insurance is not for everyone. Those without assets or enough income to pay premiums and those with substantial assets who don't mind spending the money (yet they often insure everything else).

6. The main ways to fund LTC: self-pay, ltc insurance, universal life insurance with ltc benefits, fixed annuities with ltc benefits, Medicaid.
