102 and Elsa loves life!

Elsa Brehm Hoffmann just turned 102 and her celebration was with with friends and daughter Joan on a 10 day cruise! Elsa was one of the "Fab Five" centenarians chosen by ABC last year (after a 2-year search) as the best American centenarian role models. We need to pay attantion to these fantastic role models so our senior years are as happy and healthy and as long as we want them to be. One need not have to find tips only from primative cultures; we need to know how to live within the joys and challenges of modern culture. Elsa creates a stir wherver she goes. See her on ElsasOwnBlueZone.com and be wowed

(the videos are fun and inspiring). The interest in her "secrets" has been so great that a recent release came out about her "Elsa's Own Blue Zone."

What about GOD

My grandparents lived well into their 80's with plenty of hard work and stress. The also ate tons of pork, beef, with foods they grew, hunted, raised, or fished. Oh and my father-who just turned 80- smoked when I was a kid. This man still drives and his vision is better than mine. My folks never had the advantages of a stress free life as they were poor black, share croppers living in times when Blacks had no rights or legal protections in the deep south.

The one thing you forget to mention is the effects of a deeply religious connection to GOD in addition to family.

Drugs or a happy life without doctors?

Diet is not as important as life style. It is almost like having A job, The busier you are the faster the day goes for you. Your body needs a certain amount of exercise for the amount of food you put in it and the brain also requires challenging to remain healthy, Both of which can be harmed by all these drugs doctors push on us. The immune system also requires a challenge to remain strong. Of course there is always chances that you should not take. The chances you should not take are the ones your gut tells you not to take not the ones you are nervous about. Doctors have never bean a good bet for me and with the damage the did to me I stay away from them and live a healthier life because of it.

Request to be published in our local newsletter

thank you for this article. it's informative. I find it beneficial not only to me but I think also to others. I am working in a SDA institution here in Botswana and we usually have a bi-annual edition of our newsletter called LEBONE (meaning lamp). I hope you will grant me permission on this. Thank you. Eggs and eye health

The myth about egg yolks being bad for you could have an extremely detrimental effect on your health. Not only does a "whole" egg a day help protect your cells from developing an external plasma membrane that could lead to cancer but the yolk also contains huge amounts of lutein which appears to protect eyes from macular degeneration. Eggs have NEVER been proven to be involved with increased risk of heart attacks. Eating an egg a day is one of the least expensive foods you can use to help keep your eyesight and minimize a risk for some cancers. I suppose the "health/diet" industry has their reasons for still saying bad things about eggs ... but the scientific research indicates that whole eggs are an inexpensive component of a healthy diet. By the way, most people with cholesterol problems are dealing with over production by the liver NOT a dietary problem. So eat well and learn the truth before you drink the "health/diet" industry Kool-Aid.

10 Health Habits

How timely...Just recently I learned that I was a prime candidate for a "statin" because of past and current increases in cholestrol readings. I refused taking a statin and decided to take full charge my health responsiblities. During the past 6 weeks massive changes have been made in diet i.e., no more fats, egg yolks etc. with extreme low levels of cholesterol from only approved sources. Have added more fiber, less gluton added flax, nacine and fish oil capsuls also fresh fruits and veggies. Two weeks ago began a walking program. To date I have lost 21 pounds and my pill managed malignant blood pressure problem has dropped to the point that will requiret reduced meds. Not having my favorite comfort snack junk foods laced with fats and salt was a real sacrifice however getting on a scale and watching the decline is grand and reward enough. Have only another 50 pounds to go to a truer healthy me. Determine to reach my goal as the alternative is not a livable option.

disagree with not retiring

I believe if you are in a positive work environment, then by all means stay there as long as you are able. However, if you are over-stressed and underpaid, retirement can't be that bad and may make you a happier person.

I'ts a very good information, elaboration is needed

Thanks it's a very good source of good information for health. WE need more details, please post.

Great Article - additional facts to consider

This is a well-written article, and is accurate in the most part. While some spunk monkeys may disagree, buddhists actually live longer than LDS'ers - 94 years vs. 89 years (numbers relate to buddhists in developed countries). Definitely eating a diet rich in natural proteins is the key (nuts, beans, legumes, etc...not meat).
