#1, #2 & #4 Recycle codes

Can someone tell me (I am really asking), what the difference between codes #1, #2 & #4. As I understand it, these are different forms of the same type of plasic. BUT, for some reason, I have seen articles that have said these are all safe - EXCEPT, that #1 should be used for one time use only since heat & detergents from washing cause chemicals to leech out.

Why would chemicals leech out of #1, but not #2 or #4 plastics? Whatever is leeching out, why would it not also leech out of #2 & #4? What is leeching out? Apparently BPAs are not within these codes.

Recycling Codes

Keep in mind, you can't always go by recycling codes. #7 is just a miscellaneous recycling code. BPA's are usually confined to this category, but not all #7 bottles have BPA. On the flip side, just because the bottle is code #7, doesn't mean the cap is too. You have to call the # on the product (if there is one) and ask what the bottle is made of.

For instance PediaSure comes #7 bottle, but according to their help line does not contain BPA's. HOWEVER, the underside of the cap is lined with PVC (#3), which is a carcinogen; there is no #3 on the packaging.

Exporting toxins?

What appears to be subtly stated here by the companies in question is that they won't sell these products in the US anymore. However, this does not mean sales will stop abroad. Once again, toxins are sent to the poorly informed to make a profit.

Plastic = Poison

Turns out BPA is a plasticizers with obvious and well known health effects that has been fraudulently touted as safe by manufacturers for a decade.

BUT THE ALTERNATIVES BEING USED in plastic cause worse problems, there are just not yet hundreds of studies showing the effects, so the implication is that the bottles are safe.

PLEASE NOTE: NO manufacturer claims their products are safe, merely that they do not contain the known poison . . . the other poisons will take another 5-10 years to create such overwhelming evidence that those can be pressured out of commerce too.

Despicable

Slowly Phase Out?

Beware if you think this is something that will protect your babies/children today. If it's like most things (e.g. mercury in vaccines), the manufacturers and retailers will phase out the BPA-containing products slowly over time, but that means that these products may remain on store shelves for years to come.

And if we want to praise these manufacturers for their goodwill gesture, realize that studies have existed for years if not decades revealing the harmful effects of these products, and it's only when threatened by legislature that these manufacturers have conceded.

If this topic interests you, go research the cosmetics industry and you'll be shocked to find out how little regulation there is on the products that you apply to your skin and end up absorbing into your bodies. There are many known carcinogens or carcinogenic precursors in these products, but there is really no regulation whatsoever.

gently

gently remove (forcibly if necessary) the graphic designer who (since it has to do with health) depicted a white cross on a red background (the flag of Switzerland), thinking it was a red cross on a white background (the organization that saves people's lives).

Do the right thing.

We stop selling a product we know places the health of our children at risk. Great.

But why do we stop at national borders? Are non-US babies somehow immune to the risk?

Do the right thing. The profits will come later.

baby bottles

hey, whatever happened to breastfeeding? there are no chemicals to worry about, no bottles to wash, and no formula to buy. your child will be so much healthier, no allergies, its just so much easier. i nursed all 4 of my children and they are all healthy and very intelligent. just a thought america...why not??? hospitals should do more encouraging to mothers to breastfeed instead of supplying mothers with bottles and formula. formula is made from cow's milk. cows milk is designed for a cows baby. breast milk is designed for human babies. and on top of all that, breastfed babies do not spit up or vomit everywhere. their tummy's completely agree with moms milk. and any woman can breastfeed. it takes sometimes a week for the milk to come in, and until then the baby has stored up fat while in utero, and will not starve while you milk takes its time to come in. in the meantime, your baby is getting colostrum which supplies them with much needed antibodies that protect against allergy and disease. think about it america. encourage your wife, your girlfriend, and or friend to breastfeed. their baby will be happier and healthier.

Removing BPA's - Why only Boby steps?

Can someone explain to me why, if BPA's are dangerous to infants, why wouldn't they need to remove them from all baby food packaging as well.

Why not remove them from ALL food packaging? BPA is a dangerous synthetic hormone that leeches out of the plastic packaging and is potentially dangerous to all humans. Why the big delay in removing a toxic substance once it is discovered. I'm embarrassed that Europe & Canada are light years ahead of us in consumer safety, because it will effect the bottom line of some corporate stockholder who makes campaign contributions.
