Answers: Calorie Winners and Losers

The facts may surprise you

Posted January 27, 2009

1. Soft drinks (12-ounce serving):
Answer: c) Coke, with 143 calories.
VitaminWater and Gatorade each have 72 calories, though Gatorade has a few more grams of sugar than VitaminWater. But watch your serving sizes: While 12-ounce cans of Coke are still pretty standard, the other two are most often sold in larger bottles, which means more calories and sugar.

2. Breakfast cereal (per 1 cup):
Answer: b) Quaker 100 percent Natural Granola with oats and honey, with 420 calories per cup.
Even if you eat a half cup, the recommended serving size for 100 percent Natural, that's more caloric than a full cup of the other cereals (190 calories for Smart Start, 133 for Cookie Crisp), and also contains 4 grams of saturated fat. Of course, neither of the other choices is particularly stellar either, given their high sugar content. Here are 5 helpful hints on how to choose the perfect breakfast cereal.

3. Yogurt (per brand's standard single-serving container):
Answer: a) Fage Total 2 percent Yogurt, with 132 calories in a 7.1-ounce container.
This answer probably won't surprise you because Fage's standard serving size is larger than both Activia's (110 calories for a 4-ounce container) and Go-Gurt (80 calories for a 2.3-ounce tube). But it's misleading: On a per-ounce basis, Fage is actually less caloric than the others. And Fage has less sugar (8 grams) in its 7.1 ounces than GoGurt has (11 grams) in its much smaller tube. Plus, a container of Fage will give you nearly 17 grams of protein, versus 2 in Go-Gurt and 5 in Activia.

4. Pasta Sauce (per half-cup):
Answer: b) Progresso White Clam Sauce, with 130 calories, compared with Progresso Red Clam Sauce's 60 calories and Newman's Own's 90 calories.
You may be surprised that while both of the others compare favorably with the white sauce, Newman's Own has 4.5 grams of fat and 620 grams of sodium versus Progresso Red Clam Sauce's 1 gram of fat and 350 grams of sodium.

5. Ice cream bars (per bar or sandwich):
Answer: a) Klondike Bar, at 250 calories.
That's probably not shocking, but you may be surprised to learn that the Double Churn Creamy sandwich, despite the decadent-sounding name, has fewer calories (130) than the Oreo variety (170).
