A conference in London about adverse drug reactions
Vioxx was yet another avoidable catastrophe and the excuse that the manufacturer was focussed on finding a drug that would not cause bleeding is not excuse for overlooking the cardiac and other adverse effects.
During a clinical trial for a new drug, according to a speaker who is participating in next weeks conference in London, clinical trials can be rigged to get the results the manufacturer is looking for.
Check out the list of concerned professors and doctors who are speaking in the conference I have organised next Thursday 6 November 2008 in London.
The title of the conference is Adverse psychiatric side effects of medicines: What's our responsibility? Details are on the web site www.april.org.uk
I am a bereaved mother who founded a voluntary organisation to create awareness of adverse psychiatric side effects of everyday medicines for acne, indigestion, pain, high cholesterol, and many other physical problems as well as following anaesthesia.
APRIL (Adverse Psychiatric Reactions Information Link) was founded 10 years ago and we are finally being listened to by the regulators. Unfortunately they do not have the powers to deal with pharmaceutical companies that cover up the known adverse side effects of drugs. This was evident following 4 years of investigation by the UK regulatory body the MHRA into the non disclosure of Seroxat/Paxil lack of efficacy and suicide risk for those under the age of 18 years.
The FDA were ahead of the EU in not licencing a slimming pill earlier this year, yet licensed in the EU and withdrawn in the UK last week due to concerns about psychiatric adverse effects.
If anyone is in London next week you will be welcome to come to the conference and will learn a great deal. The flyer and programmes are on the web site www.april.org.uk The concessionary rate is available for anyone with limited funds.
Renal Failure --death due to Vioxx
Like Betty from MO, my dad was given samples if Vioxx from his physician. This was never documented in his patient chart, though I still to this day have the sample packaging which can be tracked to this physician. A month after taking Vioxx samples, he developed flu like symptoms which were dismissed by his physician. Two months after taking Vioxx samples, he was in actue renal failure with less than 10% kidney function. I remember him telling me while a patient at Ohio State University Medical Center that his kidney's were toast. His family physician failed to recognize that he had, had an adverse reaction to Vioxx and failed to set him on a course of treatment that could have reversed his condition. Mind you, this occured in the summer/fall of 2000, shortly after Vioxx came on the market. The Renal Specialists were very interested in my dad's usage of Vioxx. Long story short, my dad ended up on dialysis, was on horrible drugs, a potential kidney transplant patient, and died about 6 months later from the time he started taking the Vioxx samples. He was a lost statistic, his physician never reported this as an adverse event, I did on the FDA website. Because he did not have a cardiac event, but a renal event, lawyers were not interested in a case. I cant wait to read this book, becuase in the intro it mentions Kidney problems related to Vioxx usage. I am more than happy to tell my Dad's story to anyone that will listen and I preach the downside to using prescription medication to anyone that will listedn.
no no to free samples
My doctor gave me over a year's supply of free "Vioxx". I still have several months supply left. My doctor made no annotations in his records that he gave me this or any other free sample drug and now I am up the creek trying to prove that a doctor gave me the medication. I am left with congestive heart failure, chronic kidney disease and other ailments. What do you think about that?

I found very good info about vioxx and other drugs as well.
To TONI who commented above, if you have not contacted a lawyer yet, you should. Check out the above site. I don't take any drugs without checking out side effects and lawsuits first.
Vioxx
I was a tester for Vioxx and continued to tak it until it was recalled. I now have a heart problem I didn't have prior to taking that drug. Atrial Fibrilation. Prior to taking the drug I had low blood pressure and a regular heartbeat. That drug did change something for me and luckily I didn't die from it like others have. I am now very careful and do much research on any drug I am prescribed. Be carful people!
