Marijuana Linked to Heart Disease and Depression
Reader Comments
Having read only this "report"
I bet the heavy marijuana smoker who eats a fat-laden, meat-based diet has a higher coronary heart disease risk than the vegan pot smoker. duh...
1 word: Propaganda
"That finding comes on the heels of a government report that linked pot use to psychiatric problems, including depression."
Key words are 'government report'. If you think the government is going to come up with an unbiased, legitimate study regarding marijuana you are extremely naive.
Priorities
I agree w/Propaganda. If marijuana was legal, the government would have to admit being wrong all these years and many drug companies would be out of business. I'm sorry but I'd rather put something in my body that God made than put a substance in my body that man made. It's always grown on the earth, you can do things to it in order to make it better. Other drugs that are 'safely prescribed' everyday, have to be processed in some way in order to use it. Besides, WEED IS ONE of the only drugs out there that you CANNOT overdose on. Almost everything legal like alcohol(1 of the worst drugs ever) aspirin, acetametaphin, etc. have a greater potential for overdose than marijuana. Plus, there's no hangover. We need federal policy to match medical truths. I've never heard or seen anybody hurt anyone or anything after smoking JUST marijuana. Another reason it gets a bad rap is because there are people who get busted w/it along with other harder drugs in their posession. It is NOT a gateway drug! Every drug's reaction to someone ALSO has to do with there personality and/or underlying issues they already have. I am almost 33 years old and I can tell you that it is the only drug that I've ever tried, besides alcohol(hangover, alcohol poisoning, liver diseases, etc.) One more thing, it does not lower your inhibitions like alcohol and many other drugs. I've done more stupid, regrettable things when I was under the influence of alcohol than I ever have when partaking in weed. The government needs to spend more of our tax dollars on drugs like: crack, cocaine, ecstasy, heroine, meth, etc. SO many people are addicted to prescription drugs, and these are supposed to be safe???? Because an Olympic Gold medallist partook in it, everyone is saying, "How are we gonna explain this to our children"? It's no harder than explaining why people abuse drugs that doctors prescribe. Because just as many, if not more, abuse prescription drugs over marijuana. People that have never tried it, don't know as much as they think they do. Experts say that it's more potent today than it was years ago. That's because back then, the government flooded the industry with bunk weed(low/noTHC). There is more product w/higher THC levels today, because the government is no longer increasing the supply with low level THC cannabis. With more states coping with legalizing medical marijuana, I hope it's only a matter of time before the federal government sees it needs to reform it's laws as well.
"It's only crack"
I smoke daily as well but I don't particularly like the Ed W's justification that "smoking a doob and watching a funny movie" is not as bad as going to a bar on a friday night and drinking 7 jager bombs and 12 beers.
To me, this is the same as justifying smoking crack by saying at least you're not out on the street shooting everyone in sight.
honestly....
are u serious "anonymous of PA" dont blame a beautiful thing like marijuana for your character flaws....
Propaganda!!!
At a time when 60% of Americans are obese or over weight, somehow marijuana is targeted as a leading suspect of heart disease? Give me a break. What about the Mcdonalds, Burger King, Taco Bell, Pizza hut, and countless numbers of other fast food chains? What about daily alcohol and tobacco use? What about stress and hereditary predispositions? Are any of those more likely to cause heart problems, in a much swifter manner, than a daily dose of cannabis? Ask any doctor, who is not influenced by massive drug makers, if marijuana is more likely to cause a heart condition than any of the above daily habits and the answer will be a resounding NO! I would like to see the actual data from these "studies" because I, like many daily users who are successful and productive members of society, refuse to buy into these arbitrary claims. Also, the data observed for the triglyceride levels has a significant and overlooked variable. Marijuana is known to increase appetite, which can cause some people to over eat when already full. Well what happens when you over eat? You get fat, and increase the number of triglycerides in your body. There is no clear and direct link between using marijuana and heart disease, only a vague, slippery slope fallacy created by medical doctors(most likely influence by pharm corporations). To claim that THC and cannabis use is a direct cause of heart disease is a completely farse theory and a sad attempt to keep the masses afraid of the most harmless substance known to man. THINK FOR YOURSELF PEOPLE. DONT BELIEVE EVERYTHING YOU READ.
P.S. Any substance in excess will cause you a great deal of difficulty and grief in life. May it be water, salt, sugar, fat, caffeine, tobacco, alcohol, or cannabis. Hell, living your life is gonna cause stress which can lead to heart disease. If you live your life in fear you will be only sitting and waiting to die. If you live your life too fast and furious, you will burn out the flame and be short lived. Moderation is key with any substance that alters the chemistry of the brain. After all, If i man can swim the fastest in the world, and win the most olympic gold medals in the world and use cannabis.....You people might......just maybe......be mistaken about alleged hazardous implications of cannabis use
You know what it is. Black Wall Street for life!!!!!
Moderation
I like the role pot has played in my life and will always be a smoker. However moderation and prioritization are key. Is it worse to go to the bar on friday night and drink 7 jager bombs and 12 beers or smoke a doob watch a funny movie and get the munchies? Letting any substance control your habits is bad. If you drink coffee all day long you will have a heart attack but a cup or 2 in the morning is umm umm good.
marijuana
at age 18 i went from what should have been a path and road to college with most of my friends. i, however, was one of many who decided to let pot interfere with my life.i got involved with a boyfriend who smokes and a couple of friends. it felt so good for like the first couple of months and maybe more, especially when id smoke with my boyfriend. i said i would never let my self when i first started to become addicted because i was never like that. i was so naive. after a year or two of constantly doing that every day it became not only an escape from reality, but my body wanted to go back to that positive feeling that maybe lasts 3 hours. i always had anxiety since i was a little girl but i was being treated and i learned how to handle it. after a few breakups with my boyfriend i didnt know how to live on my own. my body depended on that "positive feeling". so i always went back. it took a tole on me...to this day, at 21, im still learning to cut back. after about two years i felt sooo depressed i couldnt function. i dont even like to think about it but i can honestly say im sure marijuana had alot to do with it. of course things in moderation are ok. but 9/10 times it doesnt end up that way. it becomes a way fo life. i just want to get it across to many its NOT WORTH IT. at age 21 going on 22 i feel so set back in life....
POT AND DEPRESSION
I have read some of the stories regarding smoking pot, depression, and heart disease. In addition, I also have bi-polar 2 disorder. I smoke 3-4 times per week, perhaps a joint at each sitting. This is significantly less that the 20 plus cigs I used to smoke a day. The negative effects of the tar, smoke, etc. are greatly diminished but not non existant. I relieves symptoms in a way medication has never done.
I wish the federal government would show some backbone and remove restrictions placed upon it. I hate doing what needs to be done to obtain it.
Marijuana a cure?
I have been with my partner who suffers with anxiety and depression for over three years. During the first few years she seemed to be on a very specific cycle, in which about two months of healthy stable behavior would be followed by several months of mental turmoil. The bad months always inspired her to go back to her doctor for traditional treatment, but after a while she always seems to conclude that the benefits of traditional treatments are not worth the the negative side effects.
Enter:
A California medical marijuana card, an endless supply of legal pot,and one depressed apathetic stoner (formerly known as my partner).
She was issued the medical marijuana card by simply presenting her Prozac prescription to the "doctor" at the clinic and paying a 300.00 fee. Neither her psychiatrist, nor medical records were consulted. The clinic didn't seem to provide much instruction beyond, "Hey, if it feels good, do it! Oh and if it really feels good, do it some more!" She is now either stoned out of her mind, or anxious and depressed. She is on disability more than she is off. She is incapable of enjoying anything without marijuana and feels justified in using it to excess because it is "medically prescribed." The olny thing marijuana has cured is my misconception that it is harmless. It can be abused just like any other intoxicant and should not be marketed as cure-all for anxiety and depression.
