How to Use the Hospital Directory

Posted February 5, 2008

What is the Directory of America's Hospitals?

It is a collaboration between the American Hospital Association and U.S.News & World Report for the benefit of consumers. Access is free, and there are no registration forms or requests for personal information. Data for the directory were supplied by the AHA, which represents U.S. hospitals and healthcare networks.

How do I get the most out of the directory?

Looking for a hospital? With over 5,000 hospitals in the United States, this can be daunting. But with the directory, you can narrow the list based on criteria that are important to you. You can specify the hospital's location (by state, metro area, or distance from any ZIP code), type, and services offered. For example, using the search function you can pinpoint the ten teaching hospitals in Massachusetts that offer birthing rooms and ultrasound equipment and also have neonatal intensive care facilities.

Your search will generate a list of hospitals matching your criteria. You can click to "Show More Detail" above the hospital name to see a breakdown of the criteria you selected.

If you already know the particular hospital you want to learn more about, enter the hospital name to jump directly to that hospital's details.

The search serves as a gateway into the directory. Each hospital directory entry provides at-a-glance and contact information, statistics such as staffing and number of beds, and a list of services offered. To learn more about the terms used in the directory, consult the Glossary.

If you aren't sure what you are looking for, you can also browse the directory by state.
